In today’s world, it often seems that getting from one place to another is no longer as difficult, cumbersome, or above all, time-consuming as it used to be. If we simply want to get from one place to another, to a desired destination, we can find plenty of options for doing so. Of course, the number of these options is primarily determined by our own circumstances: our financial situation as well as our network of contacts. However, the means are mostly already available, so we generally just have to choose and make a decision.
Of course, it’s not that simple, because many factors can influence a trip. Perhaps the easiest approach is to set out without any specific goals, simply for the sake of relaxation. In that case, we just follow our imagination. Based on a few shared photos or videos, we quickly get excited and would love to hit the road right away. But it’s not that easy. First, we have to do some planning, adapt, and coordinate. Then, once all that’s done, we have to make a decision. Finally, before the big day, we pack and set off. And travel is a wonderful thing: it entices, beckons, and inspires. We can hardly wait.
There is, however, another kind of journey. Not a physical one, but a spiritual one. One in which we are guided not by goals, but by indefinable impulses and intuitions. If we have no predetermined destination, we simply set off in a certain direction, almost involuntarily. We often cannot pinpoint the reason for this or back it up with logic, yet we set off anyway. Even if our circumstances and conditions aren’t ideal for it. Even if we don’t know where we’re going or how long it will take, but most of all, where we’ll end up. That is, if this journey even has an end, because it might just be an endless journey. But along the way, difficulties can always arise. Because the road is often unpredictable, winding, descending, and ascending. Sometimes we have to take huge detours, and other times we have to blaze a trail ahead of us.
But there are times when the obstacles before us are insurmountable, and from that point on, the path leads nowhere. What looms before us is unbeatable and leaves us no chance of moving forward. In the end, there is only one solution. If the path ahead comes to an end and we cannot go around it, then we must bridge the obstacles looming before us. This point in our journey, however, represents another step forward for us. At such times, we must build a bridge between the two shores. But this is already a higher level, since the process and purpose of bridge-building are never an end in themselves. For we must not only span the obstacles, but also, by building the bridge, establish a connection with one another. By providing an opportunity for connection, we must ensure free passage between different perspectives and worldviews. And for this, it doesn’t hurt to receive help from time to time, because the other side of the bridge still lies ahead of us, waiting to be discovered…
